Nicole James is a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Northern Illinois University. Her Ph.D. is in materials chemistry, and her current research focuses on chemistry education and the reasons why people choose to pursue or avoid careers in chemistry. A first-generation college student, Nicole double majored in chemistry and German as she worked her way through college. Nicole will share practical information on career paths in chemistry, everyday applications of her research and advice on succeeding in college. Her talk will demystify this exciting STEM career and help viewers get a feel for what life is like working in a lab. Activity: After the video, you can make your own Oobleck and test its properties, properties that Nicole and a team of materials scientists researched while she was pursuing her graduate degree. Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid that can act like a solid or a liquid.
