NIU STEM Café: Exercise Your Brain: How Aerobics and Strength Training Improve Brain Function
Name: NIU STEM Café: Exercise Your Brain: How Aerobics and Strength Training Improve Brain Function
Date: June 16, 2021
Time: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM CDT
We understand that exercise improves our cardiovascular health. But did you know that aerobics and strength training also boost brain health and function? In both healthy adults and those with stroke, dementia or other cognitive impairment, exercise improves cognition and increases executive functions such as problem solving and planning. At the next STEM Café, hear from Jamie Mayer, speech pathologist and associate professor in the School of Allied Health and Communicative Disorders, and Dave Benner, Jr., gerontology instructor in the Department of Kinesiology and Physical Education. They’ll share recent research on the importance of exercise – particularly strength training and moderate-intensity aerobic exercise – for brain health throughout the life cycle and discuss their current projects working with older adults.
